Three hours of motorway, then a border that decides the day. What to sort at home, and what to check on the morning you drive.

Skopje city centre to Ladadika is 232 kilometres, and a router puts the driving at three hours flat. Allow three to four. The road is the A1, signed E75, running south through Veles, Gradsko and Demir Kapija to Gevgelija, where you cross at Bogorodica into Evzoni and pick up the Greek A1 down past Polykastro to the western edge of Thessaloniki. What no router can tell you is the crossing, which moves with the month, the day and the hour.
Bogorodica to Evzoni is the busiest crossing between the two countries. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has run at every external Schengen crossing point, replacing the passport stamp with a biometric record taken on first entry, covering the face, the fingerprints and the data page. Registration takes longer than a stamp did, and Evzoni is where the extra minutes show. The readings that exist are peak-day readings. At midday on 30 May 2026 cars were waiting about two hours to enter Greece and tourist coaches over five. On the morning of 19 July 2026 the wait to enter ran up to four hours, while the Macedonian automobile association reported its own side clear at the same time. Going home, the queue out of Greece ran over 105 minutes on the evening of 8 September 2026. The pressure sits on the Greek booths in both directions. What nobody publishes is an ordinary Tuesday. No authority puts out a median wait here, so every figure above is a report of a day bad enough to be reported. Peak runs from late May through August and onto the shoulders of long weekends, mornings and Fridays into Greece, Sunday and holiday evenings back out. A biometric passport, and a visa-free stay of 90 days in any 180. The green card is the item that catches people out. North Macedonia is not a party to the Multilateral Guarantee Agreement, so a Macedonian plate is not accepted as proof of insurance inside the EU. Buy the card at home. At the border it is slower and dearer. Carry the vehicle registration, and a notarised authorisation from the owner if the car belongs to somebody else. Whether Greece asks for an International Driving Permit alongside a Macedonian licence we could not confirm, and the Greek embassy in Skopje is the place to settle it. ETIAS is not running and has no announced start date, because the Commission removed the late-2026 target from its own page. It will apply here once a date is announced.
North Macedonia charges at barriers, section by section, with five stations between Skopje and Gevgelija. Pay in denars or by card at the lane. Contactless cards and the M-TAG device also work. Whether the booths take euro cash is not stated by AMSM or by the road operator, so carry denars and do not find out at the barrier. Greece charges at Evzoni and again on the way in. Fill up before Gevgelija, because Greek petrol costs substantially more than Macedonian petrol, and Macedonian prices reset every fortnight by regulation, so no figure is printed here.
There is a second crossing and it is worth the arithmetic. Dojran to Doirani is open around the clock and costs roughly 19 extra kilometres and about three quarters of an hour of driving. On an ordinary day that is time spent for nothing. Come to it on an August Saturday, with Evzoni holding cars for two hours or more, and it is the faster road. Let the queue decide. One roadwork was live on the direct route as this was written. Since 13 March 2026 a gas interconnector crossing beneath the A1 has restricted the Smokvica to Gevgelija section, the last stretch before the border. Check whether it is still there.
From 15 November to 15 March North Macedonia wants winter tyres on all four wheels with at least four millimetres of tread, or four-millimetre summer tyres with chains carried. Four-wheel drives need six. Studded tyres are banned outright. AMSM's standing warning names the Katlanovo to Veles stretch among the sections where rockfall is a risk, and that stretch is on this road. Greek farmers blockade Evzoni in January and February in the same rounds that hit Promachonas. The border itself is quiet in winter, so every four-hour figure on this page belongs to summer.
The A1 brings you down past Polykastro and Chalastra to the Western Entrance of Thessaloniki, the city's slowest point in the evening peak. From there the road runs along the port wall and into Ladadika from the west. Set the navigation to the partner garage. The street address on its own sends you into a pedestrian lane after three hours in a car, because the quarter's lanes carry bollards and taverna terraces a map does not show. The garage is 250 metres from the entrance, open around the clock, and charged separately at rates it sets itself, so ask us for the current one when you book. Street parking is not a realistic plan here. The municipal scheme in the centre runs Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 21:00 and Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00, and it caps a car at four hours in one sector. Self check-in opens at 15:00, and we send the garage location and photographs of the entrance before you leave home.
Three to four hours for 232 kilometres, motorway almost the whole way. The border is the part nobody can time for you. Everything published about Evzoni is a peak-day reading, and a Tuesday in October behaves nothing like a Saturday in August.
